Azal
This variety is grown particularly in inland areas where it matures well and reaches its quality level when planted in dry and well-exposed soils of the sub-regions of Amarante, Basto, Baião and Sousa. It produces wines with a light, open citrine color, discoloured, fruity aroma (lemon and green apple) not excessively intense and complex; fine, pleasant, fresh and citrusy, with a fruity, slightly acidic flavour, fresh and young, and in exceptional years can prove to be full-bodied and harmonious.
